Massena will have a new police chief next year, after current chief Mark LaBrake submitted his resignation letter to the Village Board Tuesday. In his letter, LaBrake says it has been an honor to serve as chief, and that his announcement is both a happy and sad day.

The head of the Village Police says there are many reasons why he wants to retire, like spending more time with family, and frustration over a vacant lieutenant position. The Village Board accepted his resignation, but say they share LaBrake's mixed feelings.

"We're really pleased that the Chief took the job a year ago; he did a wonderful job," said Massena Village Mayor Tim Currier. "We're very disappointed that he's leaving, but life moves on; people make decisions for a number of reasons. We're in good hands at the police department."

Sergeant Adam Love will become interim chief January 16.
