Jeffrey Smith is the pastor at Watertown's First Baptist Church.
On this day, it's a celebration. Its bell, which for years has been silent, is now once again the city's sound of a better tomorrow, just as its historic tower — which defines the city's landscape — has been its vision.
"Letting people know that the church is alive, that they can come here, the church is open and give people hope," Pastor Smith said.
It's a future because of history. This church, created in 1823, is Watertown's first. It moved into this building in 1891. As time passes, its preservation is becoming more important.
"The building is not the church. We are the people of the church. But however, we believe that this sanctuary and this building is something that is very, very important for God's people to come into," Pastor Smith said.
A preservation of foundation. In addition to services, its home to a food pantry and clothes closet. It's supporting community.
"Around here, we have a lot of people who are fixed income, low income, and no income. We are here to provide help to the community," Pastor Smith added.
With the bell back ringing, the focus shifts to the buildings stained glass windows. Fundraising is now underway. If you can help, just reach out to the church and ask for Pastor Smith.
