BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- ECC hockey player Brandon Day has been charged with assault in the third degree for tackling a referee during a tournament game at SUNY Broome on Monday.

The Broome County District Attorney's Office filed the charges Friday morning.

Officials from the District Attorney's Office say Day intentionally struck the 66-year-old referee from behind, causing physical injury and rendering the referee unconscious.

video from Sports Illustrated shows a player exiting the penalty box at the end of ECC's game against Dakota College at Bottineau and tacking the referee. A box score from the game said freshman Brandon Day received a match penalty in the game's final minute for abuse of officials, and the game was called, with Dakota winning 7-4.

ECC President Jack Quinn said on Monday that Day is suspended from the college for at least one week after what Quinn called "an inexcusable on-ice incident."

An arraignment on the assault charge is scheduled to take place in the Town of Dickinson Court.
