After powerful winds moved through Western New York and the Finger Lakes region, residents are recovering from power outages and storm-related damages.

At one point, Rochester Gas & Electric reported more than 37,000 residents without power, while National Grid reported over 5,000 in Monroe County, over 2,000 in Livingston County and over 16,000 in Orleans and Genesee counties.

New York State Electric and Gas reported over 23,000 outages in their coverage area, which includes Seneca and Wayne counties.

As of Sunday afternoon, National Grid announced it had restored almost 70% of power, but was still working on thousands of homes.

Rochester Mayor James Patrick Smith said the David F. Gantt R-Center would be open throughout the night Sunday as a warming center for anyone in need of shelter. In addition, Smith said the Rochester Transit Service will provide a direct route from its Transit Center on St. Paul St. to the Gantt Center.

Smith announced that the Jackson R-Center and Genesee Valley Sports Complex will open early on Monday at 8:30 a.m. and 8 a.m., respectively, for those in need of shelter.

All other City R-Centers and libraries will be open normal hours on Monday, Smith said.

The mayor says residents can check www.rge.com for information on estimated restoration times and storm safety tips.
