Drivers in New York are seeing a lot of potholes this season. Experts say a stretch of long, cold weather coupled with a few rainy thaws causes roads to crumble.

Potholes can do serious damage to vehicles. Mechanics say they see things like flat tires, bent rims, broken suspension components and even cracked oil pans.

Repairs like that can be expensive. AAA found in 2023 that the average cost of pothole damage repairs was $406.

Local agencies have opened a phone number where you can report the worst potholes on expressways. You can call the New York State Department of Transportation at 1-800-POTHOLE (1-800-768-4653). You can also contact your town highway department or department of public works.
