ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Regional Transit Service says the first 10 buses in its new electric fleet of vehicles will be hitting the streets.

Governor Cuomo has set a goal of 25 percent of RTS buses to be electric by 2025 and to be entirely emission-free by 2035.

The RTS says it will have to go from 10 electric buses to 54 in the next couple of years to reach the goal.

RTS also tells Spectrum News that other than the MTA in New York City, it now has the largest fleet of electric buses in New York State.

"We talk a lot about climate change and that vision for a cleaner future," said Rebecca Hughes of the New York Power Authority. "This is that vision materialized. I'm just really proud to see these going out into the community. It's the first of many."

The total cost of the buses was just over $12 million, with funding coming from both the federal and state governments.
