ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Kevin Quander was sentenced to 36 years to life in jail for the death of Charlotte Lahr.
Quander, 60, was convicted of the March beating death of Lahr, a South Avenue liquor store owner. Lahr’s daughters Heather Lahr and Leila Newton were in the courtroom for Thursday’s sentencing.
Judge Victoria Argento commended Quander for taking the plea but called him a threat to the community.
Rochester District Attorney Sandra Doorley called the crime "one of the most brutal murders I have ever seen."
She said Lahr's family is braving through the tiring times and relieved to know Quander is going to jail for a long time.
“I think I can assure everyone that he will never see the light of day again,” Doorley said. “He is ineligible for parole until he is 96. I think that he will die in prison.”
Before his sentencing, Quander, who accepted a plea deal in August, said he would have accepted the death penalty if it were offered. “My addiction has ruined my life,” he said.
After the sentencing, Lahr's family released a statment, saying "We will never forget our beautiful mom and we will love and miss her forever, but we know she's protecting us and is here with us in spirit."
