ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Every spring, Rochester transforms into a sea of purple as thousands of lilacs bloom at Highland Park.

Each year, the city celebrates this natural wonder with the Lilac Festival — an event that brings together locals and tourists alike. This year marks the 125th edition of the festival and a return to its traditional 10-day consecutive run. The event had been held on separate weekends after returning from its pandemic hiatus.

As Mark Quinn, the superintendent of horticulture at Highland Park, explains, the festival is a unique opportunity to witness one of the largest collections of lilacs in the world. With more than 1,200 lilacs and 500 varieties, it's no wonder the festival attracts visitors from all over the country.

It's not just the quantity of flowers that impresses — it's also their quality. The fragrant aroma of the lilacs fills the air, creating a sensory experience that is hard to match.

If you're planning to visit the Lilac Festival, Quinn recommends coming early in the morning or in the evening when the air is still. This is when you can truly appreciate the fragrance and beauty of the lilacs.

Even during the day, there's plenty to see and do. The festival features live music, food, arts and crafts and games for kids and adults. It's a celebration of community and culture that has become a beloved tradition in Rochester.

The Lilac Festival continues to be a time of the year when people can come together to appreciate the beauty of the world around them and to connect with the rest of the community.

The 2023 Rochester Lilac Festival runs May 12-21. For more information, click here.
