There is a continued investment by the federal government into research and development at the University of Rochester.

Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced $82 million is going to the Omega Laser Facility at the U of R Laboratory for Laser Energetics.

The funds, which come from the National Nuclear Security Administration, will go to help support science-based stewardship of the county's nuclear weapon stockpile.

About 900 jobs are supported at the lab, including scientists, engineers, technicians, and support staff.

The Omega lasers at the U of R are considered some of the largest and most capable of any academic institution in the world.
