When Anthony Trifilo says he’s loved the Bills his entire life, he means it.
“I’ve been a Buffalo Bills fan ever since I came out of my mother’s womb,” he said. "I don’t call it Bills Mafia. I call it Bills MaFamilia because we’re a family."
He’s a proud member of Bills Mafia and you can find him tailgating before every home game, happy to share some food, football and fun with his fellow fans.
"If you could see the Kool-Aid smile behind this freakin’ mask, you would know how much fun I have," he said. "Seeing all these people come by from everywhere all walks of Earth, all walks of life. It’s amazing to see these people come through."
This corps of Bills fans is easy to spot — wearing military-style jackets as they march into Highmark Stadium. You see, Anthony’s the president of Pancho’s Army, a group dedicated to carrying on the mission of generosity laid by the late Bills super fan Ezra Castro, known to many as Pancho Billa. Anthony befriended him after his son spotted Ezra dressed in his famed luchador costume.
"The goosebumps I get from thinking about this is nuts because my son like parted the Red Sea and as soon as Ezra saw him, picked him up and put him on his shoulder and it was like an aura," he said.
As Ezra became ill with the cancer that ultimately claimed his life, Anthony decided he wanted to do something to honor not only Pancho Billa, but his own late mother and his friends who’ve served in the military. So he created Pancho’s Army.
“There’s some genuine people out here that love to help people and as you know Bills Mafia is one of the most generous fanbases in the NFL and across the world,” he said.
In the name of charity, the army has raised money and held food and clothing drives for various groups and people in need, even in other cities where the Bills play away games.
"In Baltimore, I think we raised 1,200 pounds of food. In Cincinnati, we did about 800 pounds of food," he said.
They're currently holding a holiday toy drive in partnership with Total Sports Enterprises until Dec. 16. New or gently used toys can be dropped off at TSE at 3170 Orchard Park Rd., Buffalo, N.Y. 14127. All toys will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House. Those who donate will be entered to win a Josh Allen autographed jersey, a Josh Allen canvas and mini helmets. Allen is among the players who've also been made members of Pancho's Army.
While Anthony may be the leader, it’s the army, a family, that keeps the mission on track, like only Bills Mafia can.
"I’m blessed by the lord to be able to do the things I can do and have the people that surround me and help me because I tell people I’m nothing without amazing people like them," Anthony said.
