Professional baseball players are returning home after Major League Baseball cancelled the remainder of spring training because of the coronavirus pandemic.
That means Greg Cullen is back in Penfield. Drafted by the Braves in 2018, the McQuaid grad and infielder continues his workouts while his minor league season is on hold.
"It kind of stinks because I was so prepared for this upcoming season, but you just got to stay positive and keep in that routine as best you can,” Cullen said. “The toughest part is there's no date - no date to work up to. Every day you just have to make the best out of a situation."
Cullen had a solid season with the Class A - Rome Braves in 2019. The second baseman hit .270 and led his team in games played, hits and walks. Named a South Atlantic League All-Star, Cullen also drove in 58 runs.
"I think the biggest adjustment I made was just showing up every day prepared. Doing the stuff I needed to do before the games to make sure I was ready by seven o'clock," he said. "It is a grind. My body was definitely aching by August but it's what I've always wanted to do so I wouldn't want to do anything else."
No word on when baseball season will resume, but Cullen says he's ready for whenever.
"I'm just going to treat it like the offseason and keep myself in the best shape so I can show up better than I was currently," he said.
Cullen looks to start this season in High A or Double A, but he says as long as he makes a roster - the rest will take care of itself.
