Some of the top female hockey players from around the world have the chance to compete together at highest level, thanks to Bishop Kearney's Selects Hockey Academy.
The team practices at Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex with additional on campus facilities.
"We have a shooting room. You can workout whenever you want then being on the ice 4-5 days a week," said Kiara Zanon a Forward from Fairport. "Having the opportunity to put in extra work, it really motivates you to put the extra work in and get to the next level."
The program carries teams in both the U-16 and U-19 divisions.
Program Director Brent Hill says the hope is to carry anywhere from four to six local players each year.
"We're fortunate that in Western New York, here and in Buffalo, we have some of the best players in the state and in the Northeast that we can hopefully attract to our school and our program," said Hill.
This year three program members are from the Rochester area, but the goal is to prepare players for the Division I level in every possible way including a full boarding experience.
"Some of the girls I can always invite to my house and they can have a little bit of home time too," said Haley Winn, a defenseman from Penfield.
"This program has definitely opened opened my eyes to new colleges and different things to get in touch with colleges," said Liliana Moose, a defenseman from Greece.
Moose, a first year player, was drawn to the program after seeing their success at the national level. Last year the U-16 squad lost 2-1 in the national final. This year, both teams are striving to bring home the title.
"Last year was a real heart breaker, we came so close but I know the team this year, we worked really hard to get where we are," said Winn.
The girls travel to Anaheim, California next month to compete in the national championship.
