The basketball community at Saint John Fisher College and in the Rochester area is remembering Bobby Wanzer.

He was a guard for the Rochester Royals' 1951 NBA Championship team. The five-time all-star went on to coach and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987.

Wanzer remained in Rochester, coaching the men's basketball team at St. John Fisher College for 24 years. The Cardinals named the basketball floor in his honor in 2006. St. John Fisher's current coach said Wanzer was an important link to the area's great basketball past.

"You know, this guy was the NBA MVP in 1953," said Rob Kornaker, St. John Fisher Men's Basketball Coach. "That resonates with the young guys. It resonates that Rochester is an NBA franchise and now with the throwback jerseys and you see the Royal on the Sacramento Kings jerseys, they have an appreciation."

Bobby Wanzer was 94-years-old.
