ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Many Kia and Hyundai vehicle owners throughout the country are on high alert because of continued car thefts.

This year so far, police say there have been more than 217 car thefts in Rochester. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says 70% of those are Kia and Hyundai vehicles. There have been 400 thefts of those makes in the county since October.

A social media challenge sparked the thefts, according to authorities.

Multiple local police agencies gave out free steering wheel locks to Kia and Hyundai owners, but they may not have instructions. A local mechanic went through the steps to use one properly.

”It’s a little cumbersome the first couple of times you try to do it, but as long as you get it to the point where it extends all the way out like this, you’re good to go," said Scott Pundt, co-owner of Kalpins Express Auto Center.

Putting the wheel lock on correctly is the first step, but are they easily breakable for potential carjackers?

“It's pretty easy to install as you see," said Pundt. "It's just common sense to go get one, it’s free, put it on your vehicle, you will sleep better at night knowing you are protected somewhat.”

If you need a steering wheel lock please contact your local police department.
