ROCHESTER, N.Y. — New York State Police say a Rochester police sergeant who is a "person of interest" in a homicide investigation at a home on Wetmore Park has been found dead.
State Police were contacted shortly before 8 a.m. Monday by the Rochester Police Department and Mayor Malik Evans' Office for a possible homicide investigation at the home.
Officials say the victim, Janet S. Jordan, 35, of Rochester, was found deceased in the residence.
Mayor Evans says Jordan was a telecommunicator in the city’s Emergency Communications Department for more than 11 years and was instructor in the city’s Pathways to Public Safety Program.
Police say an investigation determined Melvin A. Williams, 43, of Henrietta, was a "person of interest," and was later found dead in a vehicle at Veterans Memorial Park in Henrietta. According to Evans, Williams worked as an RPD sergeant with 14 years of service.
State Police say this is an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public.
"I thank our partners in State and County law enforcement for their support this morning in the investigation into the homicide of a valued City employee," Evans said in a statement. "I offer my sincere condolences to all of those impacted by this tragic situation. I have made grief counselors and mental health services available to all City employees."
This follows a weekend of violence in the city of Rochester. The city police department's union says there have been three homicides and seven additional people shot since Friday, with 13 homicides in the city so far in 2022.
This is a developing story that will be updated as more information becomes available.
