ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Fire Department says one person has died after a two-alarm fire broke out at a home on the city's northeast side.
Crews responded to the home on Jerold Street just after 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday. When they arrived, officials say they could see heavy flames and smoke coming from the house. People standing outside the home indicated that someone was still inside.
A second alarm was called within minutes of firefighters arriving at the scene due to the severity of the fire, officials say.
When crews entered the home, they say there was extensive fire on the first and second floors. They were ordered out of the house as conditions deteriorated.
Firefighters worked to knock down the flames from the outside before attempting to enter the house again. When they returned, they found one person dead inside, according to Lt. Jeffrey Simpson, RFD public information officer.
Fire officials say the smoke alarms were working and helped alert one person to get out of the house. They are still working to determine why the second person did not escape.
One firefighter is being evaluated at a local hospital for an injury.
The house sustained extensive damage and Lt. Simpson says it will have to be torn down. He says the two adjacent homes were also damaged but are livable.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation and the name of the deceased resident has not been released.
