HILTON, N.Y. — Police say five men are in custody in connection with an investigation of thefts in the town of Parma Monday morning.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says three schools in the Hilton Central School District were placed under lockout and some school buses were searched on Monday following reports of larcenies and a burglary at homes in the area.

Deputies say they responded to reports of burglaries and car break-ins just after 4 a.m. on Collamer Road and Summertime Trail in Hilton.

Deputies say three long guns were taken from vehicles. Two have been recovered. Other items were also taken.

Police say footprints in the snow showed deputies the path the suspects took and that a vehicle stolen from Henrietta was also recovered.

Charges are pending as an investigation continues.

Tom Dzielski, who lives on Collamer Road, says he was getting ready for work when it all happened.

"It's just scary," he said. "It's happening just as I'm leaving and then my wife goes out to her car and they were in her car literally a half-hour after I left. And to see footsteps going to our backdoor...that's a whole other thought."

He says police had stopped him on his way to work as they looked for suspects.

"It's so sad here we're going into the holidays, we're just getting out of the pandemic, and here we are, people just don't care," Dzielski said.

Capt. Dean Tuthill with the sheriff’s office says it was mostly car larcenies at several homes and at least one burglary at a house.

"Car larcenies, meaning people leaving their car unlocked and it's a crime of opportunity for people folks get into their cars and take items of value," said Tuthill.

Capt. Tuthill wants to remind people to lock the doors of their cars and homes.

Deputies say several people were detained along Collamer Road but they also had information that another suspect may have been on a Hilton school bus. Deputies then responded to Hilton High School and kept students on those buses while they checked.

“We searched the buses to make sure there was no threat on the buses which there was not," Tuthill said. "All the students were then released off the busses and maintained their normal routine going to school.”

Village Elementary, Quest Elementary and Merton Williams Middle School went into lockout as they continued to search for more outstanding suspects. The district says classroom instruction continued as normal, but recess was held inside and visitors were not allowed to enter the building. The lockout was eventually lifted.

The Hilton Central School District says some high school, middle school and elementary school students were late because of the investigation.

The superintendent thanked the person who called in with concerns, saying:

"We take the safety and security of our students and staff seriously and appreciate everyone's patience while the concern was fully investigated."
