Holiday packages can be easy targets for thieves. But the New York State Police have advice on how to protect your presents from porch pirates.

Online shopping has climbed steadily over the years and the increase in packages is attracting more criminals than ever before. State police say they see an increase in stolen deliveries around the holidays each year.

They suggest setting up a video doorbell that's easily seen to deter criminals or help track porch pirates down. Deliveries of high ticket items can be sent to a friend or a neighbors house where someone is home during the day.

And while hiding gifts in the car is a good way to ensure there's no early present peeking, make sure you keep them in your trunk and don't forget to lock your doors.

"We're seeing entire neighborhoods where cars are being constantly gone through," said Trooper Jim O'Callaghan. "And even if it's something small, just change or sunglasses. Something larger would be your garage door opener because now that person has access to go into your house. So a lot of these things that people don't think about but please, please lock your doors."

Stores like Walmart and Target also allow customers to ship online purchases to a local store where they can be picked up safely.
