PENFIELD, N.Y. — The Penfield Central School District is the latest to address a new social media trend of school threats that's circulating across the country.

The district says the Monroe County Sheriff's Office found a screenshot of a gun from Snapchat that turned out to be a picture of an Airsoft gun. It was sent around this past summer and has resurfaced.

To ensure there was no threat, the sheriff's office searched the home of a student and turned up no weapons and determined the post posed no credible threat. Deputies say they will maintain a presence at the school.

"I think its important to monitor your kids social media, see what they're doing, be aware of what they have going on in their lives," said Deputy Sheriff Todd Thurston. "Check out their cellphones, what they and their friends are doing. "Like I said, if you see something, say something. We want to mitigate threats to any school district within our jurisdiction."

The Rochester City School District also addressed students coming forward with alarming social media posts and found them to be shared from other parts of the state and country. The sheriff's office says it is working with other jurisdictions to investigate the matter.

They encourage parents to reach out to the sheriff's office and their school if they see or hear of something concerning.
