ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A social media threat that has been circulating across the country has some schools on alert. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is currently monitoring the situation.

The sheriff's office says so far the threats are not credible, but they have shown up in schools throughout the state and even in Monroe County. The Monroe Crime Analysis Center is looking into what it's calling "Snapchat threats."

MCAC is in contact with the New York State Police and the FBI, as well as local police agencies. But the sheriff's office says local law enforcement has not been informed about any of these threats before.

The office says deputies are working with local school districts to provide high visibility and special attention to details in schools. This comes as Rochester police continue to be stationed outside 11 city high schools following recent violence.

As far as the most recent social media threat is concerned, there have been no specifics on what has been seen locally. However, the sheriff's office says similarly worded messages have been sent across the country. Reports of the threat discovered at other schools say the message warned of a school shooting with the wording being the same other than the school's name.

The sheriff's office encourages anyone who sees something to call 911 and says it will continue to look into the threats. The sheriff's office says it has found no evidence of any local threat.
