The Monroe County Sheriff's Office showed off the features of its drone unit Tuesday morning.
This past weekend, the unit was called in to help with an investigation in Genesee County. Using infrared technology, deputies used drones to search for a suspect that police say fled a traffic stop.
Tuesday morning, deputies put their skills on display, sending up their drone around Veteran's Memorial Park in Penfield.
The unit's new infrared technology allows deputies to search a large area at once.
Training helps them tell the difference between heat signatures to help locate people.
"You go back to the training," Monroe County Sheriff Deputy Brian McCoy said. "You use different palettes, different angles or flight patterns, if you will, and based on your training, your experience, you can call out what you believe it to be and then go clarify if that heat signature is, in this case, a person."
Deputy McCoy says the unit has been around for about four years and currently has five pilots, including himself.
A particular FAA pilot's license is required to operate the drones.
