ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Police say the driver of a car that was involved in a deadly crash with an ambulance in Rochester Thursday morning was drunk.
According to the RPD, Jamila Evans, 19, is charged with second-degree vehicular manslaughter, DWI and multiple traffic infractions.
The crash happened just before 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Central Park and North Goodman Street. Police say the American Medical Response (AMR) ambulance was responding to a call with its lights and siren activated when the crash took place.
Investigators say Evans failed to yield the right of way to the ambulance and drove through a flashing red light when she entered the intersection, causing the collision.
The rear passenger in the car, Autumn Johnson, 23, died at the scene, police say. The front passenger, also 23 years old, is currently hospitalized with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
The two AMR paramedics in the ambulance provided care to the occupants of the car before being taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
