CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — Police have released new information about a deadly crash on Route 332 in Canandaigua earlier this week.
Ontario County Sheriff Kevin Henderson says it was caused by a race between two drivers. Rachel Pierce, 39, and Jasen Ray, 29, are both from Canandaigua, according to investigators.
A deputy who witnessed the crash says the two were traveling above 80 miles per hour when they slammed into a tractor-trailer.
Pierce was pronounced dead at the scene. Her two teenage children who were in the car at the time were both treated and released from the hospital.
Henderson says their reckless driving on a busy highway, in the middle of the afternoon, putting many lives in danger.
"We had school buses that had just picked up children to bring them home. In one instance, they passed an occupied school bus with children, cutting in front of this bus in excess of 90 miles per hour," said Henderson.
Ray refused medical attention after the crash and was arrested on several felony charges.
