ROCHESTER, N.Y. — More protests are planned on Wednesday outside Rochester police headquarters after the arrest of two protesters Tuesday night and overnight.
Several Rochester police officers were also injured.
It started when Monroe County Sheriff's deputies took Nicholas Wilt, the husband of Brighton Town Board Member Robin Wilt into custody in Webster on Tuesday.
The sheriff's office says Wilt tore down a police barricade and approached a deputy. That's when police say they discovered he also had a warrant out for his arrest for not appearing in court last month. Wilt had been issued an appearance ticket for unlawful assembly and resisting arrest at a previous protest.
Demonstrators on Tuesday, including Wilt's wife Robin, went to the Public Safety Building to demand his release from jail because, as police confirm, the date of the warrant was incorrect. Wilt was due to appear in court later this month.
"My husband has been wrongfully detained by RPD due to a clerical error in which they entered his court date incorrectly. Now they're holding him on a warrant. And I am pissed."
Judge Craig Doran, the chief court supervisor, says human error in the City Court Clerk's Office created the mistake indicating Wilt had missed a September 22 court date, the correct date, October 22, appeared on Wilt's actual ticket.
Judge Doran says the clerk's office has "taken immediate action to require two additional steps of review in the clerk office to ensure that all warrants will be correctly issued."
There is video of protestors scuffling with police at the barricades, entering the Public Safety Building, and then being forced out.
Inside the PSB, police say a protestor assaulted a Rochester sergeant and another officer with a weapon. Jordan Hughes was arrested and charged with two counts of assault.
On Facebook, Robin Wilt said despite the error, she was told her husband wouldn't be released until the morning.
On Wednesday morning, Wilt told Spectrum News her husband was released between 11 p.m. and midnight on Tuesday.
