A 50-year-old woman is dead after a car crash Tuesday in Gates.

The Gates Police Department says the driver was traveling southbound on Elmgrove Road when she crossed into the northbound lane and struck another driver head-on at around 3:30 p.m.

Police are investigating if alcohol was a factor.

The driver of the other car, an 81-yar-old woman from Chili, was removed from their burning car by citizens at the scene, and taken to Strong Memorial Hospital and is expected to survive. Police say she has multiple broken bones.

On Wednesday, the Gates Police Department announced that Melanie Karkos, 50, an attorney from Bethel, Connecticut, was the deceased driver. She was reportedly in the Rochester area visiting her elderly mother.
