The man that risked his own life to save three women in the water at Sodus Point on Thursday has died of his injuries.

Draven Starr-Howell of Palmyra died Friday afternoon, according to a GoFundMe set up by his friend to help with the family's hospital costs.

The Wayne County Sheriff's office says Starr-Howell jumped off the pier into Lake Ontario to help and was overwhelmed by the rough water.

For some, it was just a day at the beach.

“We were just here for my fiancés, her younger brother’s birthday party” said Jesse Dean of Parish, NY.

But things changed quickly around 3:30 Thursday afternoon.

“We got several reports that there was three women that were off the Westside of the Sodus Point Pier that were in distress, they were in the water,” said Lt. Robert Milby, Wanye County Sheriff's Deputy.

Deputies responded to the scene, along with dozens of people in the area.

“It was crazy, everyone pretty much on the beach ran straight to the pier to see if the people were okay,” said Carzell Kemp.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office tells us the waves and undercurrent were rough Thursday.

Starr-Howell was pulled under by the waves after the three women were pulled out of the water.

Jesse Dean said, “People were pulling other people out of the water with ropes, and with beach towels, and I just did the best I could and I grabbed one person out of the water with a couple of other gentlemen.”

Dean says he jumped on a boat with deputies to help rescue the man.

“I helped them pull him into the boat, we had to come around to that dock there and we started doing chest compressions,” said Dean.

Deputies say that Starr-Howell was taken to Newark-Wayne Community Hospital and then flown to Rochester General Hospital in serious condition. He passed away on Friday.

The three women involved were also taken to the hospital.

“Those good Samaritans were standing by on the pier helped our deputy sheriff sergeant helped to rescue those three women,” said Lt. Milby.

The Wayne County Sheriff's say because of the COVID-19 pandemic, swimming is not allowed here at the beach - and there are no lifeguards on duty.
