Geneva City Council held a workshop over Zoom on Monday to discuss several police reforms that it will consider in the near future.
They include the city not hiring two officers that are currently in the academy, transparency in police complaints, data collection on police arrests, revising the body camera policy, a community review of school resource officers, and establishing a police accountability board and police budget advisory board.
Councilwoman Jan Regan argued Monday that the council was moving too quickly on these resolutions, which were proposed earlier this month.
"I'd like to understand things better and as I said I probably would... if we do go through these... I probably would vote yes to most of them but I would like bring people in and make sure they understand it." said Regan.
Councilman Ken Camera felt some of the proposals such as revising the department's use of force of policy and banning the no knock warrants for drug busts don't need to be pushed back.
"These are things that we can do right now to show that we feel of some people that have waited far too long," said Camera.
Councilwoman Laura Salamendra added that none of the proposals have to be delayed because these are the types of reforms that the community has been working on themselves.
"We need to not ignore them and talk about these things. As a coucil, if y'all feel that we need to change something or modify it. It should be taking place in the public forum and this Wednesday night and not in August so we are not kicking the can down the road," Salamendra explained.
Councilman Frank Gaglianese took issue that Police Chief Michael Passalacqua's thoughts haven't been considered in these reforms.
"I know that he wants to make a difference. Why wouldn't he? It's an opportunity for everybody and I just think that he needs to be a part of conversation and informing us of what he feels off of these things that are doable right now. He knows better than anybody because he has to abide by them on daily basis," Gaglianese explained.
The council will vote on the reform resolutions on Wednesday at 7 p.m. over Zoom.
