The man arrested for allegedly stabbing a woman inside the Walmart in Geneseo on Tuesday is now facing an attempted murder charge.

The Geneseo Police Department, Livingston County Sheriff's Office, and New York State Police responded to the Walmart on Veterans Drive around 4:30 p.m. for a report of a man with a knife and a woman stabbed.

When they arrived, they found the 34-year-old victim with multiple stab wounds to her upper body. Police say she was hospitalized but is in stable condition.

The suspect, Gregory Cunningham, 24, of Beaver Dams, was taken into custody without incident. He was initially charged with first-degree assault, but the charge was upgraded to second-degree attempted murder on Wednesday morning.

Investigators say there is no apparent connection between the suspect and the victim and they say it was an unprovoked attack.
