As many as 75 firefighters battled flames at a four-alarm Rochester apartment fire Tuesday morning. Several people who were trapped inside were rescued.

The fire broke out around 2 a.m. at the corner of Boardman Street and Monroe Avenue. The quick response of fire crews helped prevent the flames from spreading to other buildings.

Fire officials say five second-floor tenants and several pets were rescued by ladder as the intense flames prevented them from escaping.

Crews say the fire was fast-moving and they had to fight the flames from the outside as the roof collapsed.

It took about three and a half hours to get the flames under control. No one was injured.

The Red Cross is helping the tenants with shelter.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
