The Ontario County Sheriff's Office's 911 center upgraded its emergency phone system, making it easier for them to locate people in emergencies.
The 911 center upgraded to a system called RapidSOS. The technology makes it easier to track people when they call from a cell phone. Before the new system, dispatchers had to rely on the network of cell phone providers. The old system would direct dispatchers to the general area and not necessarily the exact location.
"It's kind of embarrassing that 911 is now only getting to where Uber has been for years being able to find you where you are most instantaneously, but we're there with this technology now," said Jeff Edwards, a senior communications officer.
Dispatchers say they've had this technology for about eight months and have already had success stories.
