A First Student school bus driver has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a 9-year-old RCSD student.

Rochester police say on January 7 the student, Leila Shaughnessy, arrived at School 52 and reported that she had been assaulted by a school bus driver. The girl was taken to University of Rochester Medical Center where she was diagnosed with a concussion.

As a result of an investigation between police, First Student, and the city school district, the bus driver, Jennifer Denegal, 26, of Rochester, was arrested and charged with third-degree assault.

Shaughnessy's mother released this statement on Friday:

“I’m so happy that justice was finally served for my daughter. I can rest knowing this won’t happen to her or any other student. I’d like to thank the RPD for all the effort they put in. Thank you to school 52 for everything they have done and all medical professionals that assisted.”
