BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Thursday marked the first day of the New York State Board of Elections' 10 Days of Election Security Campaign.

"There's a lot of bad information out there, particularly on social media where people can claim just about anything so we want to put as much good information out there as possible," Director of Public Information Kathleen McGrath said.

The Day 1 posts on social media platforms like X, formerly known as Twitter, and Facebook focuses on how bipartisan teams from local county boards regularly update voter registration lists.

"Each of these 10 days we're just providing a little bit of information of how elections and voting work for New Yorkers," McGrath said.

She said the state board's campaign is in conjunction with a campaign by the National Association of Secretaries of State called Trusted Info 2024. The goal is to encourage people to get their information from trusted sources.

McGrath said sometimes its an uphill battle, but a worthwhile one.

"There's already comments on the post that are claiming that we're lying and it's frustrating. People that work in elections, be it on the state or on the county level, they do it because they love elections and they believe in this process," she said.

As for the winter theme, McGrath said the holiday season is a good time of year to get people's attention. The timing is also right, ahead of what will be an important and active 2024 election cycle.

"We certainly have the presidential primary in April. We have the state primary in June. We have the general in November. We have some specials already on the calendar so it's going to be a very busy year for elections in New York state," she said.

The board said it wants to create a culture of civic responsibility and encourage eligible voters to confidently exercise their right.
