Gov. Kathy Hochul has approved a request for the deployment of National Guard troops in Monroe County to help with security for both the migrants and the local community.
A total of 77 asylum seekers are currently being housed at the Holiday Inn located in downtown Rochester. County Executive Adam Bello requested the security assistance after authorities say two migrants were charged in Erie County with sexual assault and another was diagnosed with tuberculosis.
Republican Mark Assini, who is challenging Bello for county executive in the November election, called on the county to stop the flow of migrants. However, one state lawmaker representing Rochester says that's not necessary.
"There's no reason to think that asylum seekers pose any more danger than any other group of people," said Rep. Jen Lunsford, a Democrat. "They are not inherently more dangerous. They are here legally. We are trying to build a community that is inclusive and inviting to people. So I hope the incident in Buffalo was an isolated incident."
The state is already deploying more than 1,800 National Guard members to support shelters in New York City.
The Rochester City Council is set to take donations for the migrants arriving from New York City.
The council is asking for help welcoming the newest neighbors to the Flower City. Donation bins are available at its upcoming meetings in the council chambers at Rochester City Hall on Thursday at 6 p.m. and next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Donations may also be dropped in a collection bin at the main entrance of city hall on Church Street during regular business hours. Baby and children's products, as well as clothing and hygiene products, are requested.
