GATES, N.Y. — Former Gates Police Chief James VanBrederode has announced he is running for New York State Senate.

VanBrederode says he is making a run for the 56th Senate district, a seat is currently held by Sen. Jeremy Cooney. That district includes the towns of Brighton, Clarkson, Gates, Greece, Hamlin, Parma and parts of the city of Rochester.

VanBrederode has been an advocate for crime victims, speaking out against criminal justice reforms. He also worked hard to get resources for those fighting substance abuse. He has said wants to continue his fight for change on a legislative level.

“This election is about serving, protecting and improving our communities,” VanBrederode said in a statement. “Last year the City of Rochester saw a record 81 murders, all under the failed watch of our current Albany politicians who adopted laws that were focused on setting criminals free rather than protecting Rochester families.”

VanBrederode announced his retirement from the Gates Police Department last month after 37 years in law enforcement.
