It's a new year, which means the deadline for New York municipalities to opt-out of allowing cannabis dispensaries to open has come and gone.

In the most recent data from the SUNY Rockefeller Institute of Government, of the 30 municipalities in Monroe County, 18 opted out.

Some towns voted yes, while others did not hold a vote at all, meaning they're automatically opted in, according to state law. They include the city of Rochester, Brockport, Fairport, Penfield, Irondequoit, Henrietta and Brighton, among others.

Towns that opted out like Greece and Pittsford have the choice to change their mind at any time.

On Feb. 1, the village of Pittsford will hold a public referendum.

The questions on the ballot will be whether to opt-in to allow dispensaries and whether on-site consumption should be allowed.
