Monroe County legislators are proposing the Dignified Indigent Burial Act.

"I often have families come and say, 'well, I don't want to cremate, but I have no choice.' Now the families would have another option other than cremation,” said Geraldine Dixon of G.L. Dixon Funeral Home.

Before 2006, the county offered grants of up to $1,850 for families who needed help with funeral costs. The grant was cut to $1,250.

This proposed act would increase the supplemental funeral assistance grant to $2,000 for the deceased ages six and older and $800 for children five or younger.

"It's a very cultural issue when it comes to burials. There's so much grieving that goes on within the family,” said Monroe County Legislator Calvin Lee.

"This, we hope will help allow families to be able to make those decisions, those difficult decisions. But make it with the right financial backing behind them so they don't have to have a knee-jerk reaction and say, 'well, we have no choice, we have to cremate,” said Monroe County Legislator Vince Felder.
