Monroe County Republicans still hold a majority in the legislature. But it's down to a single vote after Tuesday's elections.

In Henrietta, Democrats picked up a seat when Town Supervisor Michael Yudelson won a razor-thin victory in the 13th district.

In Perinton, retired Fairport teacher John Baynes defeated Kara Halstead, delivering a Democrat to Monroe County's 18th legislative district for the first time.

"I grew up in East Rochester so this district’s in my bones, the people of this district are my people, but I don’t take that for granted," Baynes said. "I'm super proud to go to work for the people of Perinton, and East Rochester and Monroe County, there’s a lot of work to do and I think it starts now."

With those two wins, Democrats reduced the GOP majority in the Monroe County Legislature to 15-14.

Republicans used to hold a supermajority, which gave them votes to override a county executive veto. They rarely used it because Republicans held the top office for nearly 30 years.

Now that voters elected Democrat Adam Bello, Republicans don't have that override as an option. Another sign of the change that's about to arrive in Monroe County.
