Incumbent candidate Cheryl Dinolfo lost her reelection bid against Democratic challenger Adam Bello in the race for Monroe County executive.

Bello’s win signifies the end of a historically Republican seat, which hasn’t seen a Democrat secure the position in nearly 30 years.

Before tonight, the only Democrat to be elected Monroe County executive was Tom Frey in 1986.

The Democrat and Monroe County Clerk secured 51% of the vote while Dinolfo received 48.4% of the vote. The race was one of close margins.

“We continue building a future we can be proud of. And most importantly, that our children can be proud of,” Bello said during his victory speech. “I am grateful, and I am humbled, and I am deeply honored that you have chosen me to lead us to the future as your next Monroe County executive,” Bello said. “

Bello called his election as an opportunity to begin a new chapter in the community.
