ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley is now a member of the Republican party, as announced Thursday afternoon.

From Republican to Democrat and back again, District Attorney Sandra Doorley is making the second political party switch in her career.

She said she became a registered Democrat back in 2009.

"I believe in a lot of the values of the Republican party. I've been a Republican before in my past and I believe it was time to make this change," said Doorley.

Doorley said it was personal move that she discussed with family. She asked that voters judge her on her work, not her politics.

"The voters need to look at my record. Look at the prosecution and look at the product and the service on the community. Judge me on that," said Doorley.

The District Attorney's Office has maintained a 94 percent conviction rate, since she took over in January, 2012.

Doorley will be on the GOP ticket in November, an election year that political analyst and conservative party chairman Tom Cook said could prove favorable to Republicans.

"She will have the Republican line, the Conservative line and the Independence line. I think strategically she will get more votes by changing," said Cook.

He said the uncertainty in the Democratic party could be one of the reasons Doorley switched.

"She kind of gave me the impression that she was concerned with the status of the Democratic party. There's one wing with Lovely Warren. There's another wing with Joe Morelle, and then they have a new chairman," said Cook.

The Monroe County Democratic Committee is expressing disappointment in Doorley's decision, saying in an e-mailed statement:

"Republicans in our county face ongoing state and federal investigations, with active indictments on bid-rigging and other public corruption charges. The voters on Monroe County deserve a strong and independent prosecutor."

The party is vowing it will have a competitive candidate this fall.
