A new report by the Syracuse city auditor finds problems with the Syracuse Rental Registry.
Rental registries are databases of rental properties and rental units. City Auditor Alexander Marion says that for years, Syracuse has struggled to get landlords to comply with its Rental Registry law.
The Syracuse Rental Registry, which was started in 2007, should have more than 8,300 dwellings, but may be missing thousands of properties. The audit finds that compliance with registry laws is low at only about 33%.
"Runaway Rentals" also finds issue with the budget and fees and fines.
"Sixty percent of the people who live here are tenants," Marion said. "We need to make sure they have safe, quality places to live, and boosting compliance with the Rental Registry, making sure we get that low level of compliance will go a long way in making sure all these people have a good place to live."
