ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Traveling with your four-legged friends just got easier. Trailways, New York’s largest bus carrier, will now allow pets onboard.

As she drops off her bag, Modesty Knight gets ready for the next leg of her trip.

"I have another bus to catch, and then I’m going to North Carolina," said Knight.

She’s one of thousands of Trailways passengers who travel across the country daily. Now, those passengers can include four-legged ones. Small dogs and cats under 25 pounds are allowed on Trailways buses. Before, only certified-service animals were able to travel.

Trailways President Alex Berardi said passengers are changing the way it thinks about pets.

"Just a decade ago, people wouldn’t have wanted to ride next to a pet. But now, they’re becoming family," said Beradi.

"I have a dog at home, and I think this would be easier," said Knight. "People don’t want to leave pets at home."

Similar to airplanes, pets in carriers will go at your feet on Trailways buses. When booking their ticket, passengers can add pets to their trip for a $10 fee. The policy started at the beginning of the year and so far, so good.

"So far, we haven’t had any complaints. I think it speaks to the shift in public opinion," said Berardi. "You wouldn’t complain about a baby next to you, and you wouldn’t complain about a pet either."
