ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Electric scooters, which are available to rent in Rochester, offer a way to get around quickly and easily, but in some cases, they have posed a hazard for riders and others driving around the city.
Authorities say there have been some accidents involving the Veo scooters and bikes, and the company is set on something being done to address the issues.
Each e-bike and scooter has a GPS so that the company can keep track of them. Local teams of technicians go through a process called "rebalancing" in which technicians pick up each bike and scooter and place them at pickup locations throughout the city, especially in more high-demand areas.
Spectrum News 1 spoke with company representatives last year about several scooters and e-bikes being left in the middle of sidewalks and streets. They say riders are supposed to park at a designated hub or in a place that does not block pedestrians or cars. The company has also been facing a more recent issue: people tampering with the vehicles.
Joe Bott from the company VEO says people have been trying to hotwire them and catch a free ride.
"We did install a firmware update to prevent that type of activity," said Bott, the company's policy and partnerships manager for the northeast. "We've also been in touch with local authorities and are working with them to make sure that anyone found to be tampering with the vehicle, anyone reported to be, will be reported to law enforcement."
That may fix the tampering issue for now, but what about scooters and bikes left in the middle of streets and sidewalks? Riders must submit an "end of ride" photo showing that the bike or scooter is parked correctly. If not, the ride will not end, and the person will continue to be charged.
