The New York State Office of Mental Health has announced that the Daniel’s Law Task Force will host a stakeholder listening session on May 8.

This listening session will be held at the Kate Gleason Auditorium in Rochester from 4 to 6 p.m. However, this group has had other listening sessions in other parts of the state and virtually.

This meeting, which will also be livestreamed, hopes to garner feedback on how to engage with individuals experiencing a mental health or addiction crisis, while considering equity.

The task force was established in honor of Daniel Prude, who died while in the custody of the Rochester Police Department during a mental health crisis in 2020. The task force is looking at many different models, both national and international, that could be used to develop a crisis response system.

“As we continue gathering feedback from the public, we are very encouraged by the input we’ve already received from our previous listening sessions,” Office of Mental Health Commissioner and Task Force Chair Dr. Ann Sullivan said in a statement. “With this listening session in Rochester, we’re hoping to receive even more direction from the individuals who have experienced a mental health crisis, healthcare providers, local officials and others who can help us shape appropriate recommendations.”
