In Western New York, retirement community Watermark Legacy at Willow Pond is offering a one-of-a-kind experience for its senior residents. Residents and staff are kicking off the beginning of football season by visiting the home of their favorite team.
It’s what you would see at any Buffalo Bills tailgate, fans with food, drinks and gear, all representing their favorite team – no matter the age.
“We are huge Bills fans,” community life director Emily Whitney said. “Every Sunday we watch the Bills games and Monday Night Football. We throw big parties all the time.”
“I've been a Bills fan since I went to college in Geneseo in 1948,” retired Rochester City School District Principal Ted Desoto said. “I was a season ticket holder and were members of the Jim Kelly Club and the Jim Kelly club had heated seats.”
Desoto spent many of his years celebrating the achievements of his students. The longtime Bills fan, along with several other residents, now receive their own celebration.
“We're huge Bills fans here and we're just super excited to have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Whitney said. “And so many of these residents haven't even been there yet. So to go on a guided tour, let alone a game, is just so exciting.”
Bringing the party from the tailgate to Highmark Stadium, Ted Desoto is looking forward to visiting the stadium once again.
“See the things that I've never seen before to get up there and probably a little shopping day,” Desoto said. “[I] might pick up some Bills stuff.”
With Desoto’s love growing stronger for the team throughout the years, he’s prepared to not only see the stadium but what this season has in store.
“I’m just a Bills fan,” Desoto said. “Whether they win or lose, I still root for them.”
