What You Need To Know

  • The Irondequoit Public Library 2023 Summer Reading Program is for kids, teens and adults

  • The program runs now through Friday, Aug. 18

  • There are weekly drawings for prizes

Matt Krueger, the assistant director of youth and family services at the Irondequoit Public Library would love to see more families and kids browsing and reading the hundreds of children’s books that are ready to check out.

“You know the schools have to teach kids how to read and we really want to be able to encourage that love of reading,” Krueger said. “We want to be the fun, kind of like the dessert of libraries where we get to have all that stuff. Kids get to pick what they want to read and that is what studies have proven is what is going to make a lifelong reader. So we try to build a collection and make it navigable so that kids can find what they want.”

Kids are encouraged to read 20 minutes a day, five days a week and enter to win all kinds of prizes. The same goes for tweens and teens. Students in grades 5-12 can enter to win a prize for every book they read. Prizes include Red Wings tickets, Ridge Donut gift certificates and more.

Amy Henderson is also inviting adults to take part in the IPL Summer Reading Program. Every book you read counts as one entry into the weekly prize drawing.

“I always appreciate local businesses and so we have gift cards to Sips, I-Square, Encore Chocolates, 2 Ton Tony’s as well as other small businesses,” Henderson said. “Each book is a chance to win a prize. I have three prize winners every week who will get a gift card. It just adds to the fun of summer activities and maybe sharing it with somebody they love or care about and it promotes a good time.”

The Irondequoit Public Library Summer Reading Program continues until Friday, Aug. 18.
