FAIRPORT, N.Y. — In one of Rochester's suburbs, they're keeping it green by collecting old blue jeans.

A group of volunteers there is working to keep denim clothing from making it into landfills.

As one of many parents motivated to eliminate waste in the community, Natasha Besch-Turner of Color Fairport Green is helping gather up old jeans.

"Textile waste is a huge problem in this country," she said. "In 2018, something in the order of 17 million tons of textile waste was in the municipal solid waste stream. So any amount we can stop from going to a landfill is a good amount."

The jeans will be recycled and turned into building insulation — giving new life to the worn denim.

"We're throwing away things that have value," said Besch-Turner. "So being able to take something you have, and even when you're done with it, know that it has another purpose, can be really powerful and validating."

The group set up collection spots across Fairport, including at the weekend farmer's market.

"It's just a wonderful day," Besch-Turner said. "The sun is shining, there's music in the background. There's just this wonderful atmosphere of community and coming together."

Last time, they collected more than 410 pounds of jeans. This time the goal is even higher.

"The problem is so big, and this is something manageable," Besch-Turner said. "This is something we can do, this is something we can do to make a difference."

Any step towards recycling is a step forward for the planet.

"Recycling is one of the simplest and easiest things people can do if they are concerned about what happens when they're done with items," said Besch-Turner.

Being green has never looked so blue.

"Recycling is the beginning," said Besch-Turner. "And I'd encourage anyone to see what else they can do to make their world a better place."

Color Fairport Green is collecting used denim through this coming Monday.

You can drop off your used denim at collection boxes that can be found at Fairport Village Landing and the Perinton Community Center.
