ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Nearly half of all children in Rochester live in poverty, according to the U.S Census Bureau. To combat this issue, one nonprofit organization is assisting those in need as winter approaches

“I just spent some time crocheting different hats, and I just like to make them to try to keep people's heads warm during the winter,” volunteer Jacqui Dummer said.

Safe in His Arms Ministries is a nonprofit organization assisting families with resources and support.

“A need to serve the community,” founder of Safe in His Arms Ministries Melissa Adams said. ”There is so much going on in Rochester, a lot of disparity going on. And I just wanted to be able to show love to my community.”

As many of its staff and volunteers see firsthand the poverty within the community.

“I drive school buses too,” treasurer of Safe in His Arms Ministries Daphine Hawkins said. “So I see two kids with no coats, no socks and different items like that. So I know that there's a need not only in this community, all over Rochester.”

And with winter approaching they are providing free apparel and hygiene products.

“Some of the kids are going to school with old clothes, use clothes or the same outfit for every day,” Adams said. “That helps their self-esteem to be able to be supported. So giving them we have some used coats, but we have bought a lot of brand new coats.”

They are giving a helping hand as the temperatures get colder.

“I know it's a little early and people don't like to get up early on Saturday mornings, including myself,” Hawkins said. “But I mean, just to see all the people, my heart is just blessed for this.”

The volunteers' hearts continue to stay warm year-round.

“When I am helping those who are less fortunate than I am, it reminds me of my own humanity and how I could be the one who is looking for support and I want to be able to do that for others,” Adams said.
