ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The struggle of homeless veterans is a problem across the United States, but some help may be on the way locally.
Nearly $2 million has been proposed to help complete work on a housing complex for male veterans.
In partnership with the Veterans Outreach Center, Richards House is the beneficiary of the proposed funding from of the American Rescue Plan. The money will allow them to expand and house more than 60 veterans.
Residents at the house will have access to services like health care and job programs that will help them move forward in their lives.
"After two years of being here, I went on to graduate with my degree in physical education-exercise science," said veteran Curly Gifford, a former resident of the Richards House. "And now, as they mentioned, [I] help spend my time training veterans down and the veterans gym. And I'm just very grateful that I was able to find VOC and they were able to direct me to all the programs that I didn't know existed and help me, help myself."
The proposed funding for Richards House is part of almost 40 projects in the Bring Monroe Back recovery initiative.
