The damage from the country's two most recent hurricanes, Fiona and Ian, knocked out power to millions of people. Thousands of snapped utility poles are raising a common question we all ask in the wake of these kinds of storms – why not just bury the power lines?

To answer that, our Casey Bortnick is joined by University at Buffalo assistant professor of industrial and systems engineering Sayanti Mukherjee, an expert on critical infrastructure systems, like the power grid. She discusses the cost difference between utility poles and buried lines, the difficulties of burying lines in high risk areas, hardening infrastructure, the cost to customers and more.
