ROCHESTER, N.Y. — It’s been two weeks since Rochester Police Officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz was killed in the line of duty.
Community support and tributes to him are still continuing around the area.
Nancy Ortiz Colon says she knows firsthand what it’s like losing a loved one in law enforcement.
"My brother was a police officer,” she said.
That’s why she said she came to support the Mazurkiewicz family -- one step at a time.
Ortiz Colon is one of dozens walking in memory of Mazurkiewicz. Different law enforcement departments made the lap around The Mall at Greece Ridge.
Hiram Gonzalez came out just to help another family in need.
Walking behind the bagpipes and American flags brought up a range of emotions.
"Hearing the bagpipes, it tugs on your emotions,” he said. “Some people had a smile, some people had tears.”
The walk was organized by Operation Patriot Foundation.
This is the third walk they’ve done for a fallen officer in Rochester.
While Ortiz Colon hopes this is the last walk, she says she appreciates the message it shows.
“It shows the community that we can stick together and we can support officers and the family of blue,” she said.
